Dr. Martin emphasizes that improving the health of the impoverished masses in low income countries requires treatment of non-communicable diseases (including air pollution) which account for the majority of the global burden of disease.  His underlying message throughout his talk is that if we wish to "save the world" we should improve the health and safety of women and children, especially in the impoverished areas in the world. Household smoke is a significant cause of disease in low income countries and can be prevented by simple, inexpensive and safe cooking devices.
