Young Adults
Overview
In 2023, the International Sai Young Adults (YAs) Committee, organized by zones and with subcommittees, showcased remarkable achievements. The Serve the Planet subcommittee, under the initiative of "Love the Planet to Serve the Planet," conducted insightful workshops exploring the intersection of spirituality and sustainability. The Sri Sathya Sai International Leadership Program (SSSILP) brought together 109 YAs from 30 countries, with a virtual graduation marking its impactful journey. Key subcommittees such as InSAIghts, Sri Sathya Sai Sadhana of Love (SSSSOL), Pathways, YA Veda, Ocean of Music (OoM), Information Management and Analytics Subcommittee (IMAS), YA Wellbeing, Media, and Editorial subcommittees played pivotal roles in enriching the YA experience and development worldwide.
Memorable events included the SSSIO International Conference in Sri Lanka hosted by Zones 4 and 5, the 5th European Sai Young Adults Camp in Greece, and Hong Kong's compassionate community service initiatives spearheaded by the YAs. Across zones, from Canada's nationwide tree-planting endeavor to Malaysia's extensive blood donation drive, YAs exemplified a harmonious blend of service, community welfare, spiritual exploration, and self-inquiry. These initiatives underscored the transformative impact of the Sai Young Adults movement, emphasizing collaborative efforts toward a shared vision of compassion, sustainability, and spiritual growth.
Serve the Planet (STP)
In 2023, the STP subcommittee continued to make progress in exploring the 'Love the Planet to Serve the Planet' theme, focusing on how to apply human values to become better citizens of this planet. It conducted a series of workshops titled 'Love,' which covered topics such as gratitude to Mother Earth, Right Conduct, Peace, Truth, and Non-Violence. These workshops aimed to define everyone's duty towards Mother Earth and how to foster peace by practicing the ceiling on our desires. The final workshop on Truth and Non-Violence encouraged reflection on ideal ways to live and the impact on the world, as well as a brainstorming session on ways to mitigate such impacts.
Sri Sathya Sai International Leadership Programme (SSSILP) for Young Adults
The SSSILP continues its impactful journey, bringing together 109 YAS from 30 countries in 2023. The nine modules of the program, offered in English and Spanish, are rooted in the teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. They inspire leadership based on integrity and compassion. The virtual graduation in September marked a resilient shift, bringing the total number of graduates to nearly 2,300 since its inception in 2015. Furthermore, an in-person graduation ceremony for the class of 2020-2023 took place on September 28, 2023, at the SSSIO International Conference in Sri Lanka. In total, YAs from 47 countries have graduated from the SSSILP. Many alumni now serve in key leadership roles within the SSSIO. The SSSILP is a testament to the enduring power of transformative leadership, fostering a worldwide community dedicated to positive change.
InSAIghts (formerly Young Adults Talent Development)
The InSAIghts subcommittee provides technical support for all International YA subcommittees. It hosts online meetings and offers specialized assistance, particularly for the International YA Veda program. InSAIghts also provides live translation in Spanish, Russian, Bahasa Indonesia, and Portuguese for YA online events, minimizing the language barrier and enhancing the inclusivity of the programs.
Sri Sathya Sai Sadhana of Love (SSSSOL)
The SSSSOL subcommittee guides YAs worldwide to deepen their understanding of Baba's teachings through study, practice, and self-reflection. In December 2023, 26 participants from 12 countries completed the SSSSOL program online. It featured productive discussions among past participants and senior YA leaders. Participants enjoyed reflecting on their own experiences and sharing anecdotes with fellow participants.
Pathways (formerly Group 4 to YA Transition)
The Pathways subcommittee dedicated several months to designing the new Sri Sathya Sai Pathways Development Program (SSSPDP). This program, intended for YAs aged 17-22, will provide insights on self-leadership and reflections and include discussions on conflict, communication, and boundaries. The younger YAs will enhance their spiritual knowledge and self-awareness through this program. The program encourages all participants to connect with YA peers around the world, fostering collaboration and growth. A pilot of the SSSPDP will be launched in 2024.
Ocean of Music (OoM) (formerly 'Love All Serve All')
The Ocean of Music subcommittee provided musical support for various International SSSIO events in 2023. Over 70 YAs recorded devotional songs for Maha Shivaratri, SSSILP Online Graduation, Worldwide Akhanda Bhajans, and Baba's Birthday, to name a few. Additionally, Ocean of Music Volume 4 was released on Aradhana Mahotsavam, featuring 16 bhajans and a 34-minute bhajan medley in multiple languages, musical genres, and styles. These recordings are available on YA Soundcloud, SSSIO Sai Young Adults Spotify, and YouTube social media channels.
Information Management and Analytics Subcommittee (IMAS)
The IMAS supports the International YA Program in making better-informed decisions by acquiring accurate and timely data and insights from various sources. IMAS has reviewed the current strategy of the International YA programs through focus groups and surveys.
Sri Sathya Sai International Young Adults Veda Program
The program was launched for Veda training on the auspicious day of Sri Sathya Sai Aradhana Mahotsavam, April 24, 2022. The purpose was to allow everyone to learn Vedic chanting as a spiritual practice and as an offering to Bhagawan. This initiative seeks to provide a platform for learners at all levels to engage in Veda chanting through regular online sessions led by experienced teachers, ensuring accurate pronunciation, intonation, and adherence to traditional grammatical rules. The training covers various Vedic chants, following a prescribed syllabus. In 2023, two webinars featuring Vedic scholars Sri Maunish Vyas and Dr. Vinnith Pullavarayar offered insights into Medha Suktam and Mantra Pushpam, respectively, enhancing the learning experience.
Sri Sathya Sai International Young Adults Wellbeing Program
The well-being initiative focuses on the importance of a sound body, mind, and spirit for a happy and peaceful life. The subcommittee initiated a 'Healthy Living' web page with input from physicians to provide helpful information on stress, anxiety, depression, and mental health and ways to manage them. The program also supports YAs with tools and techniques to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle. In 2023, the subcommittee worked on a wellbeing video incorporating Swami's teachings.
Sai Young Adults Media Team
The Sai Young Adults Media Team serves as the central hub for all YA endeavors, creating engaging graphics and videos across various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X, Threads, Telegram, Spotify, and WhatsApp. Additionally, the team spearheads weekly initiatives aimed at disseminating the teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba to YAs worldwide. Sai Young Adults Editorial Team
The International YA Editorial Team edits, proofreads, and transcribes various materials such as the SSSIO Annual Report, International YA announcements, Veda online seminar videos, graphics, landing pages for websites, and videos for worldwide dissemination. In addition, the subcommittee assists all YA subcommittees with proposals, scriptwriting, and captions for various YA initiatives. The Editorial Team also publishes a weekly Letter to Students column, provides the weekly Sri Sathya Sai Says video compilations in collaboration with the YA Media subcommittee, and assists with YA online initiatives. In addition, the subcommittee plays an integral part in preparing the section Ideal Sai Young Adults for the monthly online SSSIO magazine, Sathya Sai–The Eternal Companion.
Zone 1
Throughout the year, Canadian YAs passionately participated in grassroots service projects, embodying the spirit of compassion and community engagement. Their initiatives ranged from supporting the needy to contributing to local food banks and participating in clothing drives. Building on the impactful SAI-100 initiatives led by SSSIO Canada, YAs undertook a nationwide tree-planting effort by planting 1,000 trees in various parks with the ambitious goal of planting 100,000 trees across the country. In Western Canada, YAs played a pivotal role in organizing the Western Canada Sai Retreat, a gathering that brought together over 50 YAs, adults, and SSE students in August. This event built momentum for the Canadian Young Adults Festival in 2026.
In Trinidad and Tobago, YAs showcased leadership by collaborating with the Support Autism T&T organization for a painting activity benefiting children with Autism. Their service extended to an animal shelter, where they delivered essential supplies and care to over 100 abandoned or injured dogs, cats, and wild animals. Engaging in environmental stewardship, YAs participated in a beach cleanup at a turtle nesting area, collecting diverse items to preserve marine ecosystems. Further, their compassion touched the lives of older people, as they delivered custom care packages to residents in an elderly home and spread joy to the children of Casa De Corazon Children's Home with festive presents and meals.
Across the United States, YAs demonstrated commitment to personal and spiritual growth. They concluded a multi-year study circle on Prema Vahini and continued their exploration of Gita Vahini. In commemoration of Bhagawan's Aradhana Mahotsavam, YAs engaged in a 30-day sadhana called the Glory of Sai, a daily recitation of His 108 names. YA leaders focused on the SSE Group 4-YA transition and integration, drawing insights from national practices and implementing best practices. A defining moment was the National Young Adults Leaders retreat in Chicago, themed "Embracing Leadership as a Spiritual Discipline." Over 100 YAs, holding diverse leadership roles attended this transformative event. They participated in workshops, discussions, and interactive panels that re-energized and inspired them for their ongoing leadership journey within the Sai community.
Zone 2A
In January 2023, the YAs of the Dominican Republic embarked on a heartwarming initiative by delivering over 500 toys and 400 food items to underprivileged children across the country. Before the toy distribution, the YAs engaged in dynamic activities, dances, and songs, bringing joy through the gifts and highlighting human values.
In El Salvador, the YAs organized a Medical Camp at the Canton Las Flores School Center, providing primary healthcare to 52 people. The volunteers measured blood pressure, collected vital information, and distributed prescribed medicines. Their commitment and engagement reflected a profound dedication to fostering positive change in their communities.
In April 2023, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the SSSIO in Mexico, YAs actively participated in a retreat in Mexico City. They engaged in devotional singing, panel discussions, discussions on SSE, and serving on the organizing committee. In June, the YAs celebrated World Environment Day with a reforestation project in the Nativitas Forest in Xochimilco, demonstrating their enthusiasm and reverence for Mother Earth. In November 2023, the LATAM Congress convened in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, uniting young people from different nationalities in Zone 2A. The YAs held a retreat in parallel with the main event, providing a platform to renew their commitment to the organization.
Zone 2B
YAs from Argentina orchestrated a virtual devotional singing ceremony on November 11, 2023, with the enthusiastic participation of 20 YAs. In December 2023, YA leaders from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Uruguay organized an engaging and motivational online talk. The session, which focused on 'Balancing Time Between Personal and Professional Life,' was expertly presented by Mr. Arun Saigal from the United States, with about 25 participants. In a heartwarming act of kindness, 6 YAs from Bolivia personally delivered chocolate milk and cookies to needy children on December 22, 2023.
Zone 3
The YAs in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji have been dynamic in their endeavors to strengthen bonds and infuse spirituality into their daily lives. In Australia, the "Coffee with Sai" sessions emerged as a vital platform for YAs to connect, fostering an environment where they could openly share their spiritual journeys and discuss the profound significance of the organization in shaping their lives. Their commitment was further exemplified by their participation in events such as the "Vibuthi Cup," regional sports days, national retreats, and other regional gatherings.
In New Zealand, the focus shifted toward self-reflection and service, with the National Young Adults Retreat providing a meaningful space to explore their identity within the organization and establish a deeper connection with nature. Their leadership in a national blood drive was noteworthy. Regular sadhana plans, including Veda chanting, contributed significantly to their spiritual growth and mindfulness.
In Fiji, the YAs played a pivotal role in supporting various organizational activities, displaying notable involvement in the service wing during the zone-wide medical camp in July 2023. Their active participation underscored their dedication to positively impacting their communities and supporting the broader organizational goals. Collectively, these YA initiatives highlight their unwavering commitment to building strong bonds, exploring spirituality, and contributing to uplifting their communities.
Zone 4
The Zone 4 YAs played a major role in organizing the SSSIO International Conference in Sri Lanka from September 28 to October 1, 2023. They organized virtually every aspect of the conference, including exhibitions, cultural programs, panel discussions, musical offerings, and workshops. Furthermore, at the conference, an in-person graduation ceremony for the class of 2020-2023, Sri Sathya Sai International Leadership Programme, was held on September 28, 2023. In addition, Zone 4 YAs organized an online 'Train the Trainers' session for the 'RISE FOR VIP' program. This initiative aims to empower teenage girls with knowledge and skills to address social issues, particularly preventing teenage pregnancy, especially in rural areas. Thirty-three trainees from six countries attended the session. It equipped the participants with valuable information on reproductive health and available resources.
In June 2023, the Indonesian YAs organized a National Young Adults camp, attracting 215 participants. The camp featured panel sessions, cultural performances, and team-building activities. It equipped YAs with essential tools for personal and professional success, empowering them with knowledge, skills, and perspectives for a purposeful spiritual journey.
The YAs of Malaysia showcased their commitment to humanitarian causes by collaborating with the National Blood Bank of Malaysia. In February, they conducted one of the largest blood donation drives across the country, collecting 2,557 pints of blood during the holy Thaipusam 2023 celebration in six Malaysian states. Additionally, they initiated a reading project for children aged six to nine, which significantly improved the reading ability of 150 participants. The YAs, who are trained to motivate and encourage children, aim to foster a reading culture in schools and public facilities. Celebrating a post-pandemic milestone, the YAs of Malaysia organized an in-person Omkar session in the Southern Region on April 30, 2023. One hundred and one participants attended the session, which featured activities based on the life and teachings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Furthermore, the YAs of Malaysia hosted the 20th National SSE Convocation on September 23, 2023. Over 400 distinguished guests attended the event, which included the graduation ceremony for 26 Sai Young Adults, marking the completion of the Malaysia Sai Young Adults Leadership Program. This convocation symbolized both educational achievement and their deep-rooted commitment to spiritual growth and service.
In December 2023, the Sri Lankan YAs organized a Christmas Bells service, engaging children in delightful activities, distributing gift packages, providing essential supplies to families, and serving wholesome meals during the festive season.
Zone 5
In January 2023, the YAs of Hong Kong organized a Chinese New Year Winter Clothes Drive for Street Sleepers, rallying devotees to contribute over 500 clothing items for distribution to more than 150 street sleepers. The drive also included the distribution of red lai see (red money) packets containing traditional snacks and face masks, adding an extra touch of care to the initiative.
In February and September 2023, the YAs actively engaged in the Raise Your Paws service project with the Sai Kung Stray Friends Foundation of Hong Kong. Volunteers not only walked the dogs but also cleaned kennels. During these heartwarming service activities, items such as towels, dog shampoo, cleaning brushes, vegetables, rice, and cleaning supplies were distributed.
In May, the YAs organized a heartwarming Mother's Day event called Mom & Me Time with Sai at the Sai Centre. This special occasion brought together approximately 60 devotees for a memorable day filled with icebreakers, Sai-based team games, arts and crafts, and more.
Demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity, the YAs organized an essential items drive for the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired in July 2023. They distributed juice, biscuits, honey, milk powder, towels, handkerchiefs, socks, shampoo, shower gel, toys with sound, and digital tablets. The YAs spent a delightful morning with ten visually impaired students, playing fun and interactive games, singing songs, and presenting them with handmade friendship bracelets.
In August 2023, the YAs continued their community adoption program as part of the SAI-100 initiative by organizing an essential items drive for the Refugee Union. More than 200 refugees received flu medicine, socks, biscuits, dishwashing detergents, toilet cleaning detergents, coffee and tea bags, menstrual pads, and toilet rolls. The YAs also taught an SSE class for the children of refugee families, providing a spiritual foundation for education.
Zone 6
The 5th European Sai Young Adults Camp, hosted at Sai Prema in Athens, Greece, from August 19 to 27, 2023, was centered around the theme Real happiness lies within you! Bringing together 15 YAs from nine countries in Zones 6 & 7 (South and North Europe), the camp facilitated a profound inner journey. Workshops were conducted to provide practical tips and guiding principles, aiding the YAs in discovering happiness in their daily lives. Enchanting morning prayers, Suprabhatam, and soulful bhajans created an atmosphere of unity and shared love and devotion.
On July 2, 2023, the YAs of the United Kingdom actively participated in the SSSIO UK National Guru Poornima celebrations, themed Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba–The Ultimate Guru. More than 26 YAs from across the country participated in the program, which included inspiring talks by Mr. Aravind Balasubramanya. The event featured a vibrant bhajan session conducted by the YAs and a panel discussion.
In Italy, YAs organized online Satsangs, focusing on self-reflection and spiritual lives.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, YAs sang bhajans and devotional songs from different religions during the 'Yoga is Music' event. They participated in singing during the Birthday celebration of Sri Sathya Sai Baba and Aradhana Mahotsavam. Moreover, they engaged in service activities organized by their center, including donating food to the needy in collaboration with a humanitarian organization.
In Ireland, the YAs organized a community cleanup in Dublin and led a groundbreaking three-day spiritual retreat in Wexford County in August, which garnered widespread participation. The weekend began with an assembly in Wexford's serene surroundings. Activities included Suprabhatam, Nagar Sankeertan, morning yoga, devotional singing, and wholesome meals. This retreat also focused on reducing plastic and waste in the neighborhood, preserving resources, and fostering a spiritually enriched community.
Zone 7
In Latvia, an inspiring meeting was organized in an art studio with YAs, where art pieces were created. Following the art session, a story time session focused on human values and included questions and answers. Additionally, an Easter hike was arranged for YAs, during which they collected natural materials and later created a mandala near the sea.
Two YA meetings were held in the Netherlands in 2023. For Bhagawan's Birthday celebration, the YAs sang bhajans and helped with the national event.
In Sweden, YAs co-organized a service activity twice during 2023. Furthermore, they regularly conducted monthly bhajans throughout the year and initiated SSE classes in April.
Zone 9
The YAs of Mauritius initiated a 90-day project as an offering of gratitude to Bhagawan for His 98th Birthday celebrations. They recorded small one-minute videos expressing their love and gratitude to Bhagawan, which were then shared on local social media platforms. In Botswana, the Sai Centre of Gaborone conducted monthly services at a children's home named Tsogang Trust, where approximately 80 children reside. YAs actively participated by helping to serve food and snacks, preparing peanut butter sandwiches, and singing and interacting with the children. The Sai Centre of Gaborone, in collaboration with the National Blood Bank and Ministry of Health, organized blood donation camps bi-annually or as needed. YAs, many of whom donated blood for the first time in 2023, also volunteered to attend to the donors' needs, providing fruits, drinks, water, and moral support. On significant occasions such as Aradhana Mahotsavam Day, Easwaramma Day, and Bhagawan's Birthday, YAs sang bhajans and helped in many ways.
In Madagascar, the YAs of the Sri Sathya Sai Center in Antananarivo, the capital city, planted trees on February 12, 2023. Forty-two volunteers participated in the Fanenana activity in collaboration with another organization. Two hundred saplings of Moringa, Eucalyptus, and other tree species were planted. In honor of Bhagawan's 98th Birthday, an eye camp was organized at the Sri Sathya Sai Center of Tana with support from YAs on November 18 and 19, 2023. Out of 124 attendees, 94 patients were prescribed eyeglasses, which were also distributed at the camp. On December 17, 2023, YAs actively participated in the free distribution of gifts and food for all school students and children in the Tana region. A total of 518 children and teachers participated in the program.
In South Africa, YAs conducted a self-transformation mini-online series to understand the importance of sadhana (spiritual practice) in the self-transformation journey. In addition, they collaborated with the Green Buddies Organization to clean up the Blue Lagoon Beach Area in Durban, South Africa, to create awareness in the local community about littering and waste. YAs also supported the ladies' wing, adopting a community in KZN, South Africa, and holding a medical camp to assist mothers and children, covering diverse programs like planting, nutrition, and emotional well-being. Additionally, YAs contributed a bhajan recording for the SSSIO online Akhanda Bhajan.
